Hillsborough County Public Schools has the largest number of National Hispanic Scholars ever this year, with 32 students receiving the academic honor. Last year the district had 28 Hispanic Scholars.
The National Hispanic Recognition Program identifies academically outstanding Hispanic/Latino high school students across the nation. The designation is based on several criteria, including scores on the PSAT and grade point average.
“We’re proud of our Hispanic students; they’re performing at the very highest levels,’’ said Hillsborough School Superintendent MaryEllen Elia. “This is a tremendous honor. The students, their parents, their teachers, and their principals should be very proud.”
It has been a particularly good year for academically outstanding students in Hillsborough County Public Schools. When the number of National Merit Scholar semifinalists (62, up from 43 the previous year) is added to the National Achievement Scholars (19, the most in the state) and National Hispanic Scholars (32), it adds up to the district’s largest combined total: 113.
